From the Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia that anyone can change
A book is a collection of printed words on paper. Some books also have pictures; others do not. A book normally has a lot of pages and is held together between two covers. A big group of books is called a library.
Books are split into two main categories, fiction and non-fiction. Fiction stories are stories which did not really happen, and have been imagined by the author. A book based on real events, but with fictional characters or dialogue, is still fiction but sometimes called historical fiction. Non-fiction is about true facts, like history or science books, or a biography (someone's life story).
Books can be on any subject, from gardening to the human body. They are one of the oldest forms of communication besides talking.
People can read a book out loud, or to themselves. Books can be written by one person, or a group of people. Books are read for pleasure, or to gather information on an important subject like math or science.
Books can also be read aloud and recorded on tapes and compact discs. These books are called audiobooks.
Books can also be a form of art. Such books are filled with drawings called illustrations, and are carefully put together so that they last. Such books are called art books.
People can make their own books and fill them with family photos, drawings, or their own writing.
There are people in the world who cannot read books. These people are called illiterate.
